Agricultural Drought GIS and Remote Sensing Specialist

About the role

The El Niño GIS and Remote Sensing Specialist will support APEP’s drought preparedness, assessment, response and recovery activities across Papua New Guinea. The consultant will compile, analyse and visualise spatial data from satellite imagery, field assessments and government sources to inform decision‑making.

Key responsibilities

• Establish and maintain geospatial datasets relevant to drought preparedness, response and recovery.
• Integrate field assessment results, government data and remote‑sensing products to identify emerging impacts and hotspots.
• Produce maps, dashboards and briefing products that communicate drought conditions, reported impacts and response activities.
• Specify technical requirements, commission and quality‑check external remote‑sensing services.
• Support capacity development for government and provincial partners in the use of spatial information.

Required profile

• Post‑graduate qualification in GIS, remote sensing, geography, geomatics, environmental science or a closely related discipline.
• At least five years of professional experience in GIS, remote sensing and spatial analysis, preferably applied to drought, agriculture or climate hazards.
• Strong analytical, communication and report‑writing skills, with the ability to translate technical information for non‑technical audiences.

Required skills

• Advanced proficiency with GIS software such as ArcGIS Pro and QGIS.
• Experience analysing satellite‑derived drought and vegetation indices and integrating them with field data.
• Cartographic skills for producing clear, decision‑focused maps and visualisations.
• Ability to develop and maintain geospatial databases, metadata and analytical workflows.
