About the role
The United Nations Development Programme’s Humanitarian Advisory Team is looking for a seasoned Crisis Communications Officer to enhance emergency communication preparedness and response across the UN system in Papua New Guinea. Reporting to the Head of HAT and working under the Resident Coordinator, the officer will support the UN Country Team and Disaster Management Team in delivering coordinated, timely, and effective communications before, during, and after crises.
Key responsibilities
- Develop crisis communication strategies, SOPs, and response plans; establish mechanisms and tools.
- Lead training, simulations, and capacity‑building activities for crisis preparedness.
- Provide communication surge support during emergencies and advise senior leadership on reputational risks.
- Manage media relations, produce crisis messaging, and ensure accurate coverage of UN activities.
- Monitor misinformation, produce media analysis, and deliver rapid‑response communications.
- Oversee digital and social media crisis communications, creating multimedia content to promote trusted information.
- Serve as communications focal point for coordination with UN agencies, government, and partners, ensuring consistent messaging.
- Support communications on elections, peacebuilding, and social cohesion while safeguarding UN neutrality.
Required profile
- Master’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, International Relations, Media Studies, Development Communications, Political Science, Disaster Management, or related field (a bachelor’s degree with relevant experience may be considered).
- Minimum 7 years of progressively responsible experience in communications, journalism, media relations, advocacy, public information, or strategic communications, with strong experience in crisis or emergency communications.
- Fluent English (required).

- Monthly Living Allowance of US$4,020 – US$4,470.
