About the role
The Provincial Peaceful Elections Officer will support the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in strengthening electoral processes at the provincial level in Papua New Guinea. This full‑time, 12‑month volunteer assignment focuses on promoting a peaceful, transparent, and inclusive environment ahead of the 2027 parliamentary elections.
Key responsibilities
- Assist the PNG Electoral Commission (PNGEC) and provincial electoral advisory bodies in planning and implementing peaceful election activities.
- Coordinate with the Integrity of Political Parties & Candidates Commission, security forces, courts, and the Department of Justice to mitigate electoral violence and resolve disputes.
- Facilitate the deployment of UNDP, OHCHR, and UN Women resources to provincial election sites, including Mount Hagen and Wewak.
- Monitor electoral financing gaps and support timely reporting to international development partners.
- Provide technical advice on electoral law, constituency delimitation, and gender‑inclusive candidate preparation.
Required profile
- University degree in political science, law, international relations, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience in electoral support, peacebuilding, or conflict mitigation, preferably in a Pacific or similar context.
- Strong analytical and reporting abilities, with fluency in English.
- Willingness to work onsite in remote provincial locations for the duration of the assignment.
