Agricultural Drought GIS and Remote Sensing Specialist

About the role

The El Niño GIS and Remote Sensing Specialist will provide specialist spatial analysis, mapping and remote‑sensing support for APEP’s drought preparedness, assessment, response and recovery activities in Papua New Guinea.

Key responsibilities

• Establish and maintain geospatial datasets, integrating field assessments, government data and remote‑sensing products.
• Analyse spatial information to identify emerging impacts, hotspots and priority areas for assessment or response.
• Produce maps, dashboards and briefing products that communicate drought conditions, impacts and response activities.
• Specify, commission and quality‑assure external remote‑sensing services, reviewing outputs for accuracy and relevance.
• Support capacity development of government and partner staff in the use of spatial information.

Required profile

• Post‑graduate qualification in GIS, remote sensing, geography, geomatics, environmental science or a closely related discipline.
• At least five years of professional experience in GIS, remote sensing and spatial analysis applied to drought, agriculture or climate hazards.
• Strong analytical, communication and report‑writing skills, with ability to translate technical information for non‑technical audiences.

Required skills

• Advanced proficiency with GIS software such as ArcGIS Pro or QGIS.
• Experience applying remote‑sensing techniques and interpreting satellite‑derived drought indicators.
• Cartographic skills for producing clear, decision‑focused maps.
• Development and maintenance of geospatial databases, metadata and analytical workflows.
