Small Grants Programme National Coordinator

About the role

The Small Grants Programme National Coordinator will lead the implementation of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme in Papua New Guinea. Reporting to the UNDP Small Grants Programme team, the coordinator will ensure that community‑based and non‑governmental organisations receive effective grant support to address biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation, land degradation and other environmental challenges.

Key responsibilities

• Manage the full grant cycle – from call for proposals, selection, award, monitoring, to final reporting.
• Develop and maintain partnerships with local NGOs, community groups, government agencies and other stakeholders.
• Ensure compliance with GEF and UNDP policies, financial regulations and environmental safeguards.
• Provide technical guidance and capacity‑building support to grantees to improve project design and implementation.
• Prepare regular progress reports, impact assessments and financial statements for UNDP and GEF donors.
• Contribute to the development of national strategies for biodiversity, climate resilience and sustainable livelihoods.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree in environmental science, natural resources management, development studies or a related field.
• Minimum five years of experience in grant management, project coordination or programme implementation in the environmental sector.
• Demonstrated knowledge of Papua New Guinea’s ecological context and community‑based development approaches.
• Strong analytical and reporting skills with fluency in English; knowledge of local languages is an advantage.
