Underground Ventilation & Projects Engineer

About the role

The Engineer – Ventilation & Projects – Underground will design, monitor, and continuously improve ventilation systems for safe underground mining operations. Reporting to the Superintendent – Underground, the role also leads engineering projects that enhance ventilation, infrastructure, and overall operational efficiency.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement and maintain underground ventilation systems to ensure a safe working environment.
• Monitor airflow, gas levels, dust, heat and diesel particulate matter, and conduct regular ventilation surveys, audits and modelling.
• Update ventilation plans, schematics and reports, and investigate ventilation‑related incidents.
• Ensure compliance with statutory ventilation, health and safety regulations.
• Plan and deliver underground engineering projects, including ventilation upgrades and system optimisations.
• Prepare project scopes, schedules, budgets and risk assessments; coordinate contractors, suppliers and internal stakeholders.
• Manage project execution, commissioning, handover and performance tracking.
• Maintain high health‑and‑safety awareness in line with NPL policies.

Required profile

• Tertiary qualification in Mine Engineering or a related field.
• Proven experience in an underground mining environment.
• Strong understanding of underground ventilation principles and relevant mining legislation.
• Competency in ventilation monitoring and reporting tools.
• Project management and contract management experience.
