Geotech Underground Technician

About the role

We are seeking a Geotech Underground Technician to join the Mine Technical Services Department at New Porgera Limited. Reporting to the Geotech Senior Engineer, you will support daily supervision of drainage maintenance, geotechnical instrument installation and data collection, and related field activities at the Porgera Gold Mine.

Key responsibilities

• Collect data from on‑site geotechnical instruments such as piezometers, inclinometers, crack pins and Multipoint Borehole Extensometers (MPBX).
• Install geotechnical instruments and horizontal drainage holes.
• Supervise field work for drainage maintenance, slope rehabilitation and other geotechnical tasks.
• Perform laboratory and field geotechnical tests to determine rock, soil and shotcrete strength, modulus properties and ground‑support pull‑out values.
• Assist engineers in preparing and sampling shotcrete for laboratory analysis.
• Maintain safety standards, use personal protective equipment and participate in safety training.
• Keep work areas clean, organized and free of hazards.

Required profile

• Minimum Grade 12 education; technical college qualification preferred.
• 3‑5 years of experience in mine geotechnical work, preferably in the PNG Highlands.
• Valid Papua New Guinea driver’s licence with at least two years of driving experience.
• Experience in the extractive industry is an advantage.

Required skills

• Proficiency with geotechnical instrumentation (piezometers, inclinometers, crack pins, MPBX).
• Ability to install drainage holes and conduct geotechnical testing.
• Competence in using MS Excel for data handling.
