National Spatial Information Systems Specialist

About the role

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is seeking a National Spatial Information Systems Specialist to lead the development and operationalisation of a GeoNode‑based Protected Area Registry System in Papua New Guinea. The role supports FAO’s strategic objectives for sustainable agrifood systems, environmental monitoring and early warning activities.

Key responsibilities

• Review and enhance the existing GeoNode‑based Biodiversity and Climate Geo‑Portal to serve as the official Protected Area Registry.
• Manage GIS databases, including PostgreSQL and PostGIS administration, ensuring data integrity and accessibility.
• Coordinate with national partners such as CEPA, DLPP, CCDA, and PNGFA to align spatial data with legal records, management documents and monitoring outputs.
• Support land‑use planning, restoration monitoring, peatland mapping and food‑security early warning systems.
• Facilitate stakeholder engagement, user role definition, approval workflows and automated reporting.

Required profile

• Proven experience in spatial data management and GIS system implementation.
• Strong understanding of protected area management, land‑use planning and environmental monitoring.
• Ability to work under the technical supervision of the FAO Chief Technical Adviser and collaborate with multiple national agencies.
