About the role
Lead the implementation of the GEF‑funded DDT and PCB Disposal Project in Papua New Guinea, overseeing the safe and environmentally sound management of hazardous waste from initiation through final disposal and project closure. Reporting to the Senior Programme Manager and under the guidance of the Country Manager, you will ensure the project meets scope, schedule, budget, quality and ESHSS requirements.
Key responsibilities
- Develop, implement and continuously update the Project Implementation Plan, including work, procurement, resource, risk, quality, stakeholder engagement and schedule plans.
- Manage all project outputs such as site assessments, hazardous waste inventories, procurement and mobilisation of specialised disposal contractors, packaging, transportation, international shipment, final disposal and closure activities.
- Ensure compliance with the Basel, Stockholm and Waigani Conventions, the IMDG Code, the FAO Environmental Management Toolkit and all relevant national legislation.
- Provide strategic leadership throughout the project lifecycle, monitor risks and strengthen national capacity for hazardous waste management.
Required profile
- Strong technical knowledge of hazardous waste management, especially Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) such as DDT and PCB.
- Proven experience in project and contract management, procurement of specialised services and stakeholder engagement.
- Demonstrated ability to ensure regulatory compliance and manage project risks in complex, multi‑stakeholder environments.
