Chief Engineer – Port Moresby Maritime Operations

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Chief Engineer to join Svitzer’s tug operations in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. In this hands‑on position you will oversee the performance and maintenance of vessel propulsion and power systems, ensuring safe and efficient towage services.

Key responsibilities

• Operate and monitor main engines, generators and related systems during towage missions.
• Plan, execute and record corrective and preventive maintenance on engines, deck machinery and associated equipment.
• Diagnose faults, carry out emergency repairs and ensure timely resolution.
• Maintain compliance with safety standards, ISM code, SOLAS regulations and local port requirements.
• Participate in safety drills, training and competency development programmes.
• Monitor, report and help improve safety performance, hazard identification and incident management.
• Ensure environmental regulations and safe work practices are followed.

Required profile

• Valid Engineer Class 2 Certificate of Competency (e.g., PNG Maritime College).
• Current SOLAS safety‑of‑life‑at‑sea certification and NMSA medical fitness certificate.
• Relevant maritime experience, preferably in harbour towage.
• Strong problem‑solving and fault‑finding abilities.
• PNG passport valid for at least six months.

Required skills

• Operation of marine main engines and generators.
• Planned Maintenance System usage.
• Fault diagnosis and repair of marine propulsion and deck machinery.
• Knowledge of ISM code, SOLAS and environmental compliance.
