Mechanical Maintenance Engineer

About the role

Wärtsilä is seeking a Mechanical Maintenance Engineer to coordinate daily mechanical maintenance activities at its Lihir site in Papua New Guinea. The role ensures plant performance targets are met while upholding quality, health, safety and environmental standards.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate daily mechanical maintenance tasks and supervise the assigned team.
• Achieve plant performance targets in line with contractual requirements.
• Train new employees on maintenance procedures, standards and safe working practices.
• Monitor condition and availability of maintenance equipment, spare parts and tools, taking corrective action when needed.
• Ensure all work complies with Wärtsilä QHSE guidelines, customer site procedures and the maintenance plan.
• Inspect completed maintenance and repair work for correctness and safety compliance.
• Coach and mentor maintenance personnel, assisting with complex equipment issues.
• Develop and continuously improve maintenance routines and practices.
• Prioritise and assign tasks to optimise resources and meet schedules.

Required profile

• Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Maintenance Engineering or a related technical discipline.
• Hands‑on experience in mechanical maintenance within a power plant, industrial plant, mining or heavy‑industry environment.
• Experience supervising or coordinating maintenance teams is highly desirable.
• Strong understanding of Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental (QHSE) requirements.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills, able to work in a multicultural, remote site environment.
• Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
• Willingness to be based at the Lihir site and work according to the site roster.
