Senior Mechanical Engineer

About the role

Wärtsilä is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead daily mechanical maintenance activities at the Lihir Site in Papua New Guinea. You will ensure plant performance targets are met while fostering a safe, high‑quality work environment.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate daily mechanical maintenance activities and ensure compliance with contractual performance targets.
• Train and guide new employees on maintenance procedures, standards, and safe working practices.
• Monitor equipment, spare parts, and tools, taking corrective action when required.
• Inspect completed maintenance work to verify correct execution and compliance with specifications and safety standards.
• Coach and mentor maintenance personnel, supporting complex troubleshooting and diagnosis.
• Develop and continuously improve maintenance routines and prioritize tasks to meet schedules and performance goals.

Required profile

• Willingness to work onsite at the Lihir Site under local roster arrangements.
• Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Maintenance Engineering, or related field.
• Relevant experience in power plant, mining, heavy industry, or similar operational environment.
• Strong hands‑on experience with preventive and corrective maintenance and troubleshooting of mechanical equipment.
• Good understanding of QHSE requirements and safe working practices.
• Proven team‑leadership skills, including planning, coordinating, and developing maintenance teams.
• Effective communication skills and ability to work in a multicultural environment.
• Fluent written and spoken English.
