Tug Mate – Port Moresby, PNG

About the role

Svitzer is seeking experienced Tug Mates to join its operations in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. As a Mate you will act as second‑in‑command on our towage vessels, ensuring safe and efficient port operations while supporting the Master on navigational watches.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate crew attendance, provisioning and operational readiness.
• Ensure compliance with Svitzer policies, statutory obligations, quality assurance and ISM procedures.
• Manage crew discipline, report and escalate issues as needed.
• Supervise tug maintenance and assist with repairs.
• Prepare operational reports and conduct induction training for visitors and personnel.
• Lead the crew in safety management system compliance and adhere to roster arrangements.
• Participate in skills and competency training, including mentoring trainees.

Required profile

• Valid Mate Class 3 Certificate of Competency issued by an approved regional maritime training institution.
• Current SOLAS Safety of Life at Sea certification.
• Valid GMDSS radio operator certificate.
• Current NMSA Medical Fitness Certificate.
• Relevant maritime experience, preferably harbour towage.
• PNG passport valid for at least six months.
