Geotechnical Engineer – FIFO at Hidden Valley Mine

About the role

Harmony is looking for a Geotechnical Engineer to join its Mine Technical Services Department on a FIFO basis at the Hidden Valley open‑pit gold and silver mine. Reporting to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer, you will provide technical support for ground stability, slope performance and risk management across mine operations.

Key responsibilities

• Implement and uphold the Harmony SE Ground Control Management Plan, conducting daily pit and dump inspections and regular infrastructure, camp and access‑road checks.
• Record observations in the designated database, generate detailed reports and communicate fall‑of‑ground incidents to pit supervisors and senior engineers.
• Maintain and analyse geotechnical monitoring data from prisms, radar, vibrating‑wire piezometers, extensometers and telemetry systems, producing weekly hazard maps and slope‑monitoring reports.
• Oversee the slope depressurisation programme, including horizontal drilling design, collar sign‑off, pad preparation and rig inspections.
• Design and execute pit‑wall mapping programmes to validate geological models and support diamond‑drilling field data collection.

Required profile

• Minimum three (3) years of operational geotechnical experience, preferably in open‑cut mining.
• Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, Mining Engineering or a related Earth‑science discipline.
• PNG citizenship with a valid Class 3 or 6 PNG driving licence and willingness to undergo pre‑employment medical and drug/alcohol testing.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Surpac, Deswik and Quikslope software.
• Experience using Groundprobe slope‑stability radar and telemetry monitoring systems.
• Knowledge of diamond‑drilling operations and geotechnical data collection.
• Ability to analyse monitoring data from prisms, radar, vibrating‑wire piezometers (VWP) and extensometers.
