Medical Officer, Maternal-Child TB/HIV Project (MCTHP)

About the role

The Maternal-Child TB/HIV Project (MCTHP), implemented by the Paediatric Society of PNG in partnership with Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) and the UPNG School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and managed by the PNG-Australia Transition to Health (PATH) program, is recruiting a TB and HIV Medical Officer. The post is based at PMGH, starts in November 2026 and runs until 31 December 2027, and is open to PNG citizens only.

The MO works mainly in the Paediatric Well Baby Clinic, providing clinical care to children with HIV and integrating TB services such as TB preventive treatment, while mentoring staff at outreach clinics and supporting prevention of mother-to-child transmission. The MO reports to the MCTHP Program Manager and coordinates between the paediatric HIV clinic, the TB clinic and the maternal TB team.

Key responsibilities

• Provide clinical care to children and families affected by TB and HIV
• Ensure contact tracing, presumptive TB and preventive therapy registers are kept up to date
• Deliver activity reports and contribute to project reports and presentations
• Support colleagues in the O&G unit in managing peri-natal women with presumptive or active TB
• Run regular outreach to NCD Basic Management Units, mentoring clinic staff so children with HIV and/or TB can be cared for closer to home
• Visit antenatal and HIV clinics to strengthen prevention of mother-to-child transmission and referral pathways
• Perform fine needle aspiration and gastric aspiration when required, and conduct nutrition assessments (MUAC, WFH)
• Attend routine management meetings and compile accurate project data and reports

Required profile

• At least 2 years of experience as a Medical Officer
• Qualified Medical Officer; additional higher qualifications in O&G are an advantage
• Exceptional communication skills and a proven ability to work independently and as part of a team
