Power Generation Engineer / Technician (FIFO, Mine Site)

About the role

Monlo, a PNG-owned electrical, instrumentation and mechanical contractor founded in 2011, is recruiting an experienced Power Generation Engineer / Technician for its mine-site technical services team. The role covers electrical, instrumentation and control systems support for diesel gensets, gas, hydro and solar/hybrid plant, working with the client's power services team. It is a full-time, on-site position on a 28 days on / 28 days off FIFO roster from Port Moresby.

Key responsibilities

• Operate, maintain, fault-find and repair diesel, gas, hydro and solar/hybrid power generation plant and associated switchgear, protection and auxiliaries
• Diagnose and resolve engine, alternator and control-system faults using OEM tools such as CAT ET, Perkins EST, DSE Configuration Suite and ComAp InteliConfig
• Configure, maintain and troubleshoot genset controllers (EMCP, PowerWizard, DSE, ComAp), PLCs, HMIs, synchronising and load-sharing systems, ATS/changeover and black-start logic
• Calibrate, maintain and repair instrumentation (pressure, temperature, level, flow, vibration and speed sensing; 4-20 mA / HART loops; protective relays)
• Carry out scheduled preventive maintenance, inspections, sensor change-outs and overhauls in line with OEM schedules and site procedures
• Perform pre-commissioning, commissioning and load testing of new or modified plant
• Review event and diagnostic logs and recommend corrective actions
• Prepare technical job reports, fault reports, maintenance records and handover notes
• Supervise and mentor site trade assistants and junior technicians
• Follow site HSE, permit-to-work, LOTO and confined-space procedures, and comply with AS/NZS 3000 and PNG electrical regulations
• Liaise with the client's power services superintendent and engineers

Required profile

• Minimum 5 years' hands-on experience in power generation (diesel genset operation and maintenance essential)
• Trade certificate, diploma or degree in Electrical, Instrumentation, Electrical & Instrumentation, Electro-Mechanical or Power Engineering
• Working knowledge of diesel, gas, hydro and solar/hybrid generation, synchronising, load sharing and protection
• Able to read and mark up electrical, control and P&ID drawings
• Strong written English and physically fit and medically cleared for FIFO mine-site work
• Current PNG Police Clearance Certificate and valid PNG driver's licence
• PNG citizen or holder of a valid PNG work permit

Required skills

• Demonstrated competence in control systems, PLCs, instrumentation and genset controllers (EMCP / PowerWizard / DSE / ComAp or equivalent)
• Desirable: CAT genset experience, mine-site experience, high-voltage switching authorisation, PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider) and SCADA/HMI, solar PV, BESS and hybrid systems, fuel transfer systems, reliability-based maintenance and root cause analysis
